Description

This activity will introduce participants to Ancient Roman culture by writing a short theatre play about a day in the life of a Roman household. The script is presented as a conversation in an instant messaging app.

Development

Session 1

By trying to answer the question `Who lives here?’  the teacher introduces the activity to the classroom following a previous class on Ancient Rome. (10’).

Students team up in groups of four people and do some research into  Ancient Roman habits, social roles, and domestic spaces and chores. (20’).

Based on the research, students conceive and plan a 15-20 line conversation among the members of a Roman household. The task involves creating characters according to the social roles of the period and the social class of the household and using a range of media expression forms (texts, pictures, etc.). (30’).

Session 2

Students download a fake Whatsapp chat generator app (Yazzy), get familiar with it, and write the conversation using it. (20’).

Students read their conversations aloud and their classmates give feedback following the teacher’s prompts. (30’)

Evaluation

Teachers evaluates the whole activity in terms of the skills to be acquired in the subject curricula.
